
Chernivtsi is a well-known scientific and educational center in Ukraine and abroad. Research Institutes of Thermoelectricity, Problems of Applied Mechanics and Mathematics, World Economics and International Relations of the Academy of Science of Ukraine, the Institute of Medical and Ecological Problems of the Ministry of Health Care of Ukraine, Chernivtsi National University, Bukovynska State Medical Academy, Chernivtsi Trade and Economics Institute, Institute of Economics and Law, Bukovynskyi State Institute for Finance and Economics.
At the beginning of the school year 2002-2003 in 53 high schools there were 29,280 students, 7,346 children of pre-school age are brought up in 52 educational establishments. 2,191 teachers and 808 instructors are engaged in the educational process (among them 88.2% with the university higher education, 9.3% ordinary special education).
The Department of Education ensures organizational and control function concerning the state policy in education, especially the adherence of the contents of education to state standard, preservation and enhancing of the educational network, the increase of the level of knowledge and skills in:
- 46 high schools with the Ukrainian language of study - 94% of students;
- 4 high schools with the Romanian language of study - 2.7%;
- 2 high schools with the Russian language of study - 3.3%;
- 1 gymnasium where teaching is carried on both in Ukrainian and Russian languages.
Proper attention is paid to the development of creative talents of high school students through the educational institutions of new type which comprise about 20% of students.
There are 5 gymnasiums, 3 lyceums, and 3 sport schools, the Municipal Center of Scientific and Technological Creative Activities of high school students, Young Technicians Club, "GERDAN" Theatre-Studio, the Children and Youth Palace. The Sunday German School functions at Gymnasium #1, and at Gymnasium #3 - Polish Sunday School. In high school #41 the Hebrew language, traditions and history of Jewish people are studied.
There are 18 higher educational institutions (universities, institutes, colleges). Among them:
- Chernivtsi National University after Yuriy Fedkovych - 12,635 students, major directions of specialization are natural, applied sciences and humanities;
- Bukovynskyy State Medical University - 2,600 students - trains doctors and nurses;
- Chernivtsi Trade and Economics Institute of Kyiv National Trade and Economics University - 1,932 students - trains specialists in management, the economy of enterprises, marketing, accounting and audit, finance and credit for trade and services.
- Institute for Economics and Law (the first private higher educational institution in the region) - 1,273 students - trains specialists for the various branches of national economy in law, finance, accounting and audit, the economy of entrepreneurship;
- Bukovynskyi State Institute for Finance and Economics - 1,268 students - trains specialists for treasury and tax activities, the finance of enterprises and organisations, state finance;
- Chernivtsi Faculty of National University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute" - 545 students - trains specialists for information systems in management, engineers, experts in ecology.
