Lviv Offers Lion as a Gift to Chernivtsi

“For many ages Lion has been a symbol of Lviv. One can see it in every nook of our city. So getting a chance, in the name of Lviv community I would like to present you and Chernivtsi community with the sculptural symbol of our city on the occasion of acknowledgement of Lviv as the cultural capital of Ukraine in 2009.
During two weeks, famous Ukrainian artists and singers (Kuzma Skryabin and Ruslana) ornamented figures of lions. Each of this figures turned into a real work of art. The artists were trying to convey the mood of our city, its openness, versatility and hospitality. Please accept this present and dispose it in Chernivtsi. I’m sure that this modest gift will strengthen friendship between our two cities and testify unity of our beautiful country”, – wrote Mayor of Lviv Andriy Sadovyi to Mayor of Chernivtsi Mykola Fedoruk.
The Department of the town planning complex and land relations of the City Council was charged to prepare suggestions considering the place for the symbol of Lviv in Chernivtsi.
Reference. According to the results of lots casting on the traditional art-festival “Parade of Lions” in Lviv, Chernivtsi got the lion that tells about “City of Sunny Rains”. It took the second place in the voting for the sympathy of audience. The sculpture was ornamented by Andriy Povh and Myroslava Lozyuk.
